“THE MAGAZINE WITH AN ATTITUDE”
1991-1999 | L.A.
PITCH:"To present a magazine that helps define the Hip-Hop phenomenon and assists in its survival, instead of just riding the coattails of its success." Or, in real talk, a West Coastally heavy look at everything from underground acts like Volume 10 to icons like KRS-One.
NOTABLE FOR:
"Chambers of Death...Choose One" (Wu-Tang story), February 1994; "A Day in the Life of the L.A. Underground" (Ras Kass/Good Life story), October 1994; "Deep Concentration" (DJ Premier interview), April 1996; Putting Kwest Tha Madd Ladd on the cover, Sept 1996; Giving Benzino his long-awaited first cover in 1999.
DEATH KNELL:In 1996 the core creative team of E-I-C Sheena Lester, Managing Editor Gabriel Alvarez and Art Director Brent Rollins moved east to work at VIBE and ego trip, respectively. Dream Hampton took over briefly but resigned under duress caused by the murder of longtime friend Notorious B.I.G. The magazine slowly decayed over the final two years, was sold by owner Larry Flynt Publications, and eventually shuttered.
LEGACY:Lots of overlap with the ego trip fam, including writers Elliott Wilson, Gabriel Alvarez, and art director Brent Rollins. Also, a who's-who of ’90s hip-hop journalism, including E-I-C Sheena Lester, T-Love, Cheo H. Coker, Carter Harris, and Bobbito Garcia. Relaunched as relaunched at RapPagesMagazine.com in January 2008.
RATING:At its best, it was the perfect counterpoint to The Source, especially with regards to West Coast coverage.
